Bridgebuilders start LCA Agentschap NL has commissioned a major LCA research on the environmental impact of bridges of different materials. A similar study was also commissioned by SenterNovem in 2009 already performed by Beco Group. The results were very positive for composite bridges. The present study is more comprehensive and broader in materials. The participants in this study are: Tata Steel, DSM, Building with Steel and Plastic Composites Association Netherlands (VKCN), Royal Dutch Association of Timber Trade Association (NTTA) and Association of Manufacturers of Concrete Netherlands (BFBN). The study consists of a life cycle assessment (LCA) and DuboCalc study of several bridges. DuboCalc is a method of Rijkswaterstaat to evaluate the environmental performance of civil works. In addition, the effect of the Dubocalc tool for bridges is tested. Finally, the study shows how the different materials can be used as sustainable as possible to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. The first results are expected early 2012. |
